I was fascinated by this book. Having researched topics of communications and influence, I thought I was well versed on the subject. However, so many of these “covert” ideas were completely new to me, and it was incredibly interesting to see them applied to a topic that we all want to better understand. Namely, how has Donald Trump pulled this off?At the beginning of his book, the author provocatively asserts, "Trump is not merely beating his rivals at their own game, he’s mastered a game that few candidates have ever played.” Fair enough. That part was pretty obvious from watching how Donald Trump easily beat out one of the deepest Republican fields in a long time. What is less obvious is the so-called playbook that Geoff Blades suggests Trump is using.
Delving into Trump’s winning formula, the author breaks down in a clean logical sequence, the ways that Donald “baits the media,” and drives as much attention as possible to his campaign. The author calls this notion, “The Trump Two-Step” and he shows you specifically how Donald Trump courts controversy, and uses it to keep driving home his messaging (which, as Blades points out, is the most effective messaging in the field - a point that's hard to disagree with given the results).
From here, Blades works through some of Trump's mastery of influence: the way he “reframes” all conversations to further drive his messaging. Blades keys in on how Trump has destroyed his rivals with potent attacks and illustrates that Trump constantly solidifies his reality telling us over and over that he’s “winning” --- which he is.
In the next section of the book, “A Wizard of Communicating” the author steps through some ideas that were pretty surprising to me.
As someone who’s closely read Dale Carnegie, I have endeavored to apply many of these skills over the years. However, I’ve never come across the types of ideas that Blades shares with us. Reading this part of the book, I felt I had missed key notions of communicating, which will impact the way I speak and write going forward.
In this section, the author steps through Donald’s “natural” style, pointing out that we can all train ourselves to “naturally” influence. Then he dives specifically into some of the ways that Donald masterfully uses certain types of speech patterns (such as repetition, and vague language). Then, in the chapter “Beyond Words,” the author tells us that the words actually matter little (perhaps as little as 7%), relative to Donald’s body language and physical dominance of his rivals. All of the topics that Blades highlights in this book were highly interesting and exremly illuminating.
For anyone interested in influence, or simply understanding exactly how Donald Trump has eviscerated his rivals, I can’t recommend this book highly enough (regardless of your political affiliation).

Blades breaks the book into three parts each with multiple chapters A Wizard's path, a Wizard of messaging, and a Wizard of communicating. Each chapter outlines real world examples of how Trump seemingly effortless beats his opponents. The real thing to know is that it's not effortless, it only looks that way.
And that's why this book is a must read for anyone who needs to communicate effectively, because Blades unpicks the mystery and shows how the magic actually happens. That's magic that anyone who takes a short time to read this book can easily understand, and then with a little effort they can start to practice the techniques and improve.
In short, Blades has done a remarkable job.
