"The Tail of the Raccoon Secrets of Addiction" is a scientific short story set in the Eastern Woodlands of North America. The story follows the adventures of a raccoon, called Sign Tracker, and other inhabitants of the Great Forest. What is unique about the story is that the adventures of the raccoon are based on scientific studies of the hidden and overlooked causes of drug addiction. As noted in the Educational and Scientific Commentaries that are included with the story, sign-tracking is a well-established scientific phenomenon which speaks to the remarkable power of reward cues to control and direct behavior. This story is designed to appeal to all ages. Children are charmed by the antics of the raccoon, while, at the same time, they learn how actions can become disconnected from intention. For college students and adults, reading the story is nostalgic of a more innocent time, and yet, the storyline clearly delivers a message about the underlying causes of drug addiction.

Nice story which really helps explain the concepts in an entertaining way. Highly recommended for students interested in the psychology of addiction
the worst. who is this even written for?
This was a gift, so didn't get a chance to read it, but the gift receiver loved it.
I have experience with addiction personally and have done homework on the phenomenon of the disease of addiction and alcoholism which grips people in the United States and around the world. This simple children's story does a phenomenal job of illustrating what happens to a using addict who has become "powerless," having lost the ability to stop using. It also explains the clear insanity of using and relapse the addict who, with a life in shambles or after a period of abstinence, recovery, and good living, can be lured back into addiction by a simple "trigger" (in this story's case, the wood). The power of a drug to so compel an addict or alcoholic to return to the misery and destruction of addiction time and time again cannot be explained with logic. Arthur Tomie and his colleagues have been therefore exploring the psychological causes that lead to this irrational behavior, and sign tracking is not only the best explanation I've yet heard, but also a phenomenon which I identify with from personal experience. I applaud the publishing of this series and encourage parents, especially those with addiction or alcoholism in the family, to read the stories to their children. Complete abstinence, avoidance of triggers (people, places, and things the addict/alcoholic used with/at), and a support network of other addicts/alcoholics who understand what it's like to be pulled towards an object that will, and has previously, destroy their lives, seems to currently be the only means of escaping this behavior. I encourage anyone with a problem with addiction to also read this story, and to seek recovery. There are fellowships and support groups across the world that can help people escape the misery and terror of addiction - notably, 12-step fellowships. People in the grips of addiction can get the rings on their tails back, and keep them.
This is a wonderful and engaging scientific short story that is great for both children and adults. Using a raccoon who lives in the forest, an interesting creature who is sure to keep your children engaged, it illustrates what happens through the loss of self control and how when one keeps getting rewarding, the negative effects that can come of it. Be sure to get this story, you wont regret it! Also very easy to read.
This book and it's 2 follow-up books contain material which introduces children (and their parents) to the world of addiction by means of a very interesting story line about a family of raccoons. I highly recommend them to anyone with young children.. the books are well written in an entertaining style. The scientific information at the end of the books also adds a clear explanation of how addiction works.
I was required to purchase this book for two of my classes this semester, one which is lead by Professor Tomie (co-author of the book). But like most students, I delayed reading the book because it was a required text. I read the story summary on the back, but it wasn't interesting to me. However, when I actually started reading, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story. It's modeled and written like a children's book but relays information about sign-tracking very well. It made me nostalgic (reading a kid's book) but at the same time I was learning. The feeling was weird but I really liked it.
I read both Tail I and Tail II for my psychology classes and these books were like nothing that I have read before regarding drug addiction and the process associated with it. What I really like about the book is the way in which the story is told, it's very disarming and just really fun to read. This book focuses on the loss of self control and how that can lead to drug abuse and addiction. Once an association is formed by the brain then Sign-Tracking occurs (raccoon behaves towards the wood as though it was the reward) as well as the loss of self control; you can't stop even if you wanted to. There is a disconnection between action and intention. This is the secret, when you want to stop, it's too late and you don't see it coming, there are no warning signs ahead. We all know the signs of addiction but that's after the fact, what puzzles us the most is when how/when does it start and this book and the rest in the series does a perfect job of really showing the full process in a way that kids of all ages and adults as well can understand. And it provides a new and different perspective on addiction compared to other materials that are available to the public.
