A 1938 cocktail of lies, love, and murder. After steeling her nerves to leave the swindler she married, Catherine Reedy hopes for a brighter future for her two-year-old son. That dream turns into a nightmare when the corrupt chief of police fishes her husband’s corpse out of the Mississippi and vows she’ll hang for his murder. Someone wants Cat dead sooner—before the annual Street Fair leaves town. The handsome cop who offers to help Cat seems honorable. But who can she trust? Everyone she knows has secrets. And the Street Fair’s merry lights can’t touch the dark hatred that’s spawned a clever killer, one who won’t stop until a deadly vendetta is complete.

A delightful roller coaster ride of a mystery, although it features a Ferris wheel, not a roller coaster.

Set in the 1930’s, during the Depression, Catherine Reedy Black struggles to provide for herself and her family. When her estranged husband is found floating in the flooded Mississippi, dead, the corrupt local police chief is determined to see her hang for the murder. His mob connections reach throughout the town and beyond.

Cat is impulsive, as evidenced by her marriage to a con man who turns to blackmail and extortion. She is equally impulsive in becoming involved with a local police officer, contributing to her well-deserved reputation as a shameless hussy in the local community, although she tries to hide under the cover of a modest female employee of the local bank. Until she is fired.

When her family is threatened, Cat is determined to unravel the mystery of her husband’s death. Concern for the well-being of her toddler son provides strong motivation. Her grandmother and sister-in-law provide most of the care for the child, leaving her free to pursue her investigative activities unencumbered.

She realizes she can’t expect help from the local police, and isn’t sure who she can trust.
The plot twists back on itself several times, and I was very near the end before I was able to figure out much of the mystery. I enjoyed the historical setting, which rang true for me.

The ending is satisfying, and while it doesn’t wrap up all the questions I had, it does cover the major plots and subplots. This strikes me as realistic, since in life, very seldom are all the ends tied up neatly.

One concern for me is the treatment of animals in the novel. A family member is trying to raise mink in the back yard, and the conditions under which they are kept are appalling. It’s probably historically accurate, but no one, including Cat, ever seems to question the situation or attempt to provide any reasonable care for them.

Not what I was expecting.
I am impressed that someone from my hometown is an author; found this book very interesting since it is set in my and her hometown
Linda Lovely did it again! Her "Lies" characters are fully formed and believable... especially the despicable sheriff, whom I hated from chapter one! The culture and attitudes of the 1930's and the Midwestern small town setting provide juicy flavor to a lively "who done it." Do yourself a favor and get hooked on Linda's books. She tells a delightful story!
This book is a wonderful step back in time into the 1930s. The characters are great and the plot is interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.
Through Linda Lovely's novels, I have been a willing traveler from the Atlantic costal region to Puerto Rico to the upstate of South Carolina. In reading Lies Secrets Can Kill, I become a time traveler as well, visiting a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1930's.
Catherine Reedy Black is an intelligent and determined young woman, estranged from her husband, responsible for her family, and accused of murder. In a small town where everyone has secrets, it is hard to know whom to trust. The Street Fair, with its air of gaiety and dark underbelly underscores this theme. Lovely's book offers the full package a tightly woven and suspenseful plot, a mystery, romance! Lovely's gift of describing time and place while weaving a great story make this novel impossible to put down. A great vacation read!
LIES is a well-plotted mystery that offers a fascinating glimpse into late Depression Era life in an Iowa town. Cat Reedy’s no-good husband is found murdered, and while there’s no shortage of suspects, the local police chief is determined to see her hang. As Cat fights to prove her innocence, only her family and a local policeman believe in her. Secrets complicate the problem. When Cat, too, becomes a target, the annual street fair adds both excitement and danger. Colorful characters and lots of action make LIES a good choice for a cold winter read. Recommended!
Linda Lovely takes us back to the Speakeasy days in a book that is historically accurate instead of nostalgic. Keokuk, Iowa could be River City in Meredith Wilson's MUSIC MAN, but this 1938 Keokuk feels almost a gritty as Chicago, and in some ways more dangerous for its isolation. The heroine is Catherine Reedy, a spunky, but naive girl who meets a con man and falls for the persona he has chosen to show her. By the time she learns his true nature, she is married to the jerk. When he ends up floating in the Mississippi the suspect list is approximately the size of the Keokuk phone book, but a crooked and vengeful Sheriff wants to pin the murder on Cat. The Sheriff may have the power, but Cat has her wits. Read it and you'll see that Linda Lovely weaves a tale most satisfying.
